Hi everyone,
Let’s go into the weekend with this energy.
Yes, Danielle launched a credit card, and that’s just one thing that happened this week. Let’s get into it.
This week on the internet…
Yeah, the WeWoreWhat credit card is real
As Business of Fashion reported:
“Influencer Danielle Bernstein is betting that if her followers will buy a WeWoreWhat sweater, they will sign up for a WeWoreWhat credit card.
Bernstein is partnering with fintech start-up Imprint to launch a co-branded WeWoreWhat Visa Rewards Card. Initially, the card will be linked to a user’s bank account, with a credit card planned for later this year.
Imprint, which has raised $52 million in funding according to Crunchbase, makes money on every card swipe through fees processed by the merchant. Bernstein does not profit off the transactions themselves, rather from a sponsored deal with Imprint to help promote the partnership, and of course, from the sales of WeWoreWhat. Cardmembers will get cash back and other perks.”
Look, I’m not finance expert, but I will say pivoting to a credit card is an interesting choice from an influencer like Danielle, who can’t seem to stay out of drama. At the very least, it raises questions. Like, why would you get a credit card from an influencer?
I honestly don’t know if this is something people are even interested in? If this was someone you really liked, for example, would you get their credit card? Is this a troll? Is Danielle gonna become a millionaire off of this, and it’s a wise business decision?
I guess we will see!
Stoney Clover Lane launches line at Target, the girls go wild
Stoney Clover Lane is an accessories company that makes bright colored bags and other fun stuff. It’s an influencer favorite, but is also VERY expensive.
So when they announced they were launching a collab with Target, people got PSYCHED. The line came out a few days ago, and since then I can’t stop watching SCL x Target hauls on TikTok.
A lot of people also sent me this hilarious video where a woman called SCL “yassified Rae Dunn” which is…amazing.
Did you guys pick any up this weekend?
Crypto girl bosses!
The girlies have come for crypto, finally!
As the Washington Post reported:
“Gwyneth Paltrow and Mila Kunis joined a Zoom in January to encourage 5,000 women in the audience to break into the male-dominated world of crypto. ‘We have watched a lot of these bros get together and earn a lot of money,’ said Paltrow, sporting a black turtleneck, sun-kissed glow and a disarming smile. ‘We deserve to be in this space just as much.’
Kunis had recently launched a cartoon series with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, that uses NFTs, a digital deed often used to sell digital art that exploded into a $25 billion market. ‘We are so conditioned as women to be risk-averse,’ Kunis said. ‘I want to take risks and I want to see what happens.’
The two-hour event resembled a pandemic-era PowerPoint party, where friends share slide shows on random topics, and LuLaRoe, the multilevel-marketing company that convinced women to bulk-order brightly colored leggings by promising sisterhood and financial independence. It was hosted by BFF, a community co-founded by Brit Morin, a press-savvy start-up founder and half of a Silicon Valley power couple, to launch collections of NFTs.”
We love a LuLaRoe reference. I lost $50 in Dogecoin and vowed to never crypto again, so I am not an expert here. But crypto and NFTs just make me go, is this a scam?
One more thing…
My BuzzFeed News coworker Scaachi Koul and Sarah Hagi are launching a podcast called Scamfluencers, which seems very much up our alley.
From Nylon:
“For those waiting with bated breath for the next addictive scheming fiasco to reveal itself, there’s now Scamfluencers, the new Wondery podcast series that unpacks the ambitious stories of deception from the worlds of social media, fashion, finance, health, and wellness.”
Check it out!
Have a great, scam-free weekend,
Stephanie
